Abstract
Abstract: The academic journey involves multiple challenges of a personal, social, and academic nature. These demands can create contexts of vulnerability and lead to changes in behavior patterns, including the possibility of engaging in the use of substances of abuse. Aiming to characterize the patterns of psychoactive substance use among students of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (IPCB), the present study employed a quantitative, cross-sectional, and observational methodology through the administration of an online questionnaire on patterns of substance abuse and perceptions, targeting all students enrolled at IPCB during the 2024/2025 academic year. A total of 217 students responded to the questionnaire, representing approximately 4.3% of the total population. The sample under study was predominantly composed of students under the age of 24, with the average age being 23 years. The results revealed that 71.4% of respondents had never used drugs, while 28.6% had used or currently use them. Cannabis was the most commonly used substance, with 18.9% of students reporting either occasional or daily use. The data highlighted the influence of the university context on the formation of perceptions regarding drug use. A large portion of respondents agree with and have no issues with students who use drugs for recreational purposes. Despite the limitations of the present study, the results obtained represent a relevant contribution to understanding the issue under analysis, supporting the need for institutional reflection and the development of strategies that promote literacy in addictive behaviors.
