Abstract
Abstract: Smoking is one of the main risk factors for cardiovascular diseases, with potential impact on lipid metabolism. This study aimed to analyze whether there are differences in the lipid profile between smokers and non-smokers among students from Escola Superior de Saúde Dr. Lopes Dias. The study was conducted with 47 participants, including 20 smokers and 27 non-smokers. Sociodemographic data, smoking habits, and lifestyle information were collected through a questionnaire. In addition, venous blood samples were collected, and the following lipid parameters were measured in the laboratory using the colorimetric method: total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides. Statistical analysis included normality tests, mean comparisons (Student’s t-test and Mann-Whitney test), correlation tests (Pearson and Spearman), and univariate and multivariate analyses. No statistically significant differences were observed between the study and control groups in the lipid parameters analyzed. The analysis of the impact of control variables on the lipid profile did not reveal significant results, although the multivariate analysis indicated a trend of influence from dietary habits and physical activity, without reaching statistical significance (p = 0.08 and p = 0.09, respectively). Thus, we can conclude that, in the young individuals studied, smoking did not show a significant impact on the lipid profile, possibly due to the short duration of exposure and relatively healthy lifestyles among the participants.
