Abstract
Abstract: Introduction: Sleep is a basic need vital for human health and necessary for life. A good quality of sleep is necessary for it to fulfill all its functions, it plays a fundamental role in energy recovery, metabolic balance and physical and psychological development. Having sleep disorders leads to fatigue and daytime drowsiness that can inhibit the proper functioning of cognitive mechanisms such as attention, concentration and memory, which can be associated with a deterioration in physical condition. These factors are important in sports performance. Sleep deprivation can have significant effects, especially on submaximal and prolonged exercise. Impaired sleep can also influence pain perception, immunity and inflammation. The quality and quantity of sleep must be considered when athletes train, before, during and after competitions. Sleep education must be part of coaches' learning in order to enhance the sporting performance of athletes under their responsibility. Objective: The objective is to evaluate the impact of practicing handball on sleep quality, as well as characterize the sleep assessment components through the PSQI questionnaire, of handball practitioners in the pre-season and during the season and correlating the load of self-reported training with the results obtained in the PSQI questionnaire. Methods: The sample consists of handball players aged 18 years or over to evaluate the relationship between sleep quality and the practice of handball. Questionnaires completed in person will be applied, namely the PSQI-PT and a questionnaire characterizing the sport of handball. Results: The results showed overall stability of sleep quality throughout the season. Although there were some variations between preseason and peak season in some PSQI components, there were no statistically significant differences. Conclusion: The results showed overall stability of sleep quality throughout the season. Although there were some variations between preseason and peak season in some PSQI components, there were no statistically significant differences.
