Abstract
Abstract : Introduction: There are several injury risks associated with horse riding. Despite some understanding of these, injury and mortality rates remain high. This may be related to a lack of evidence on injury predisposing factors, specifically in competitive riders. Objective: To identify and map injury predisposition factors in riders involved in competitive riding in countries with a greater competitive culture. Methods: The review was conducted in accordance with the JBI (Joanna Briggs Institute) guidelines and the PRISMA-ScR (PRISMA for Scoping Reviews) checklist. The search for articles was conducted up to June 2025 in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and PEDro databases and was complemented with grey literature. Study selection and information extraction were performed by 2 reviewers. Results: A total of 690 citations were returned, of which only 6 studies were included. The main predisposing factors for injury were: female gender, age between 21 and 40 years, psychological factors, falls, inexperience of the horse and the use of protective vests. Conclusion: There is a gap in the available evidence on predisposing factors for injuries in competitive riders. Despite some similarity between the evidence, its small volume does not allow conclusions to be drawn. There is a need for more studies on the subject, more standardized and specific studies with a view to providing support material for the role of physiotherapy in the prevention and treatment of injuries.
