Abstract
Introdução: O envelhecimento populacional tem contribuído para o aumento da prevalência de doenças crónicas como a osteoporose, que afeta significativamente a densidade mineral óssea e aumenta o risco de fraturas nos idosos. A deficiência de vitamina D, frequente nesta faixa etária, é um dos fatores de risco mais relevantes, com impacto direto na saúde óssea, muscular e funcional. Objetivo: O meu estudo teve como objetivo analisar a relação entre a deficiência de vitamina D e o risco de osteoporose no envelhecimento. Metodologia: A revisão sistemática foi realizada na base de dados PubMed, seguindo a metodologia PRISMA e os critérios PICO para a seleção dos estudos incluídos. Discussão: Estudos demonstram que a deficiência de vitamina D em idosos está associada à redução da densidade mineral óssea, maior prevalência de osteoporose, aumento do risco de fraturas e diminuição da força muscular. Verificou-se ainda que idosos com fraturas ou institucionalizados apresentam níveis particularmente baixos de 25(OH)D. Conclusão: Os dados analisados sugerem que a deficiência de vitamina D é um fator de risco relevante para a osteoporose em idosos, contribuindo para a perda de densidade mineral óssea e o aumento do risco de fraturas.
Abstract: Introduction: Population ageing has led to a higher prevalence of chronic diseases, such as osteoporosis, which significantly impacts bone mineral density and increases the risk of fractures in older people. Vitamin D deficiency is one of the most relevant risk factors in this age group, directly impacting bone, muscle and functional health. Objective: This study aimed to analyse the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and the risk of osteoporosis in an ageing population. Methods: A systematic review was conducted in the PubMed database, following the PRISMA methodology and PICO criteria to select included studies. Discussion: Studies show that vitamin D deficiency in older adults is associated with reduced bone mineral density, a higher prevalence of osteoporosis, an increased risk of fractures and decreased muscle strength. It was also found that elderly people with fractures or living in institutions have particularly low levels of 25(OH)D. Conclusion: The analysed data suggest that vitamin D deficiency is a relevant, modifiable risk factor for osteoporosis in the elderly, contributing to loss of bone mineral density and an increased risk of fractures.
